applications. You are probably receiving
lots of advice about your future – from parents, relatives, teachers, and
friends. Whether your goal is to attend a university, a community college, a
local technical school, or a private college, or even if you are undecided, within a
year, you will have to make some important decisions about your future

Fall Season
Keep in mind that colleges look
for both a strong GPA and challenging coursework.
Have you completed your
community service hours? Are you involved in extracurricular activities?
Competitive colleges want to know "How is this student different from every
other able student who applies?"
Now is the time to start
thinking about where you want to go to college, so start researching your

would like to attend and request additional materials from them (via email or
snail mail).
Study for and take the
PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
Free Practice Tests are
available online at
Test Prep Review.
You should get your PSAT/NMSQT
score reports in December. Study them carefully and analyze your strengths and
weaknesses.
If you work during the school
year, try to limit the time to 15 hours a week or less. Research suggests that
students who work longer hours earn lower grades.
Spring Season
Register to take the SAT I
and/or ACT tests this spring.

Choose your senior year courses carefully. Colleges want to see that
seniors are working in strong and challenging academic courses.
