Juniors

Your junior year will be challenging and your last best chance to make a strong impression on  college and scholarship applications. You are probably receiving lots of advice about your future – from parents, relatives, teachers, and friends. Whether your goal is to attend a university, a community college, a local technical school, or a private college, or even if you are undecided, within a year, you will have to make some important decisions about your future education. This page has been designed to help you sort through some options.

Fall Season

*      Keep in mind that colleges look for both a strong GPA and challenging coursework.

*      Have you completed your community service hours?  Are you involved in extracurricular activities?  Competitive colleges want to know "How is this student different from every other able student who applies?"

*      Now is the time to start thinking about where you want to go to college, so start researching your options.  Explore College Planning from our main page.

*      Make a list of colleges you would like to attend and request additional materials from them (via email or snail mail).

*      Study for and take the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Free Practice Tests are available online at Test Prep Review.  You should get your PSAT/NMSQT score reports in December. Study them carefully and analyze your strengths and weaknesses.

*      If you work during the school year, try to limit the time to 15 hours a week or less. Research suggests that students who work longer hours earn lower grades.

Spring Season

*      Register to take the SAT I and/or ACT tests this spring.  TestPreview offers free tests for practice and skill developing.

*    Choose your senior year courses carefully.  Colleges want to see that seniors are working in strong and challenging academic courses.

*     Browse Career Cruising which is available online to help you search for colleges based on your interests, location, and other important elements. See a counselor in Guidance for the required user name and password information.  Career Cruising is located  at http://www.careercruising.com.

*      Spring break is an ideal time to begin visiting colleges that have sparked your interests.

*      Start writing an essay for college admissions and scholarship applications. Aren't sure where to begin?  Check out Writing the Essay tips page.

*      Explore "Scholarships" from our main page.  It is not too early to register with FastWeb for free information on scholarships.
