PELHAM ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
The Pelham Elementary School opened its doors in the 2002-2003 school year. It is the result of a concerted effort of many Pelham citizens and school staff. A state-of-the-art building, Pelham Elementary will accommodate over 1,000 students for the future. The building is 110,000 square feet in size and consists of 41 regular classrooms. Two art rooms, two music rooms, a media center with computer lab, separate student dining area and gymnasium, enrichment room, as well as spaces for special instruction. The school is carrying on the tradition of excellence that characterized the educational experience at E.G. Sherburne School for over 70 years. An inclusionary school for many years, PES continues to serve the needs of all children in the regular classroom to the fullest extent possible. A full compliment of highly trained professionals and assistants are committed to this goal.
Academic programs at each grade level are present and provide quality instruction in reading, language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies on a daily basis, with instruction in art, music, physical education enrichment, health, library, and technology (grade 5). Our Guidance staff, School Nurse, and Reading Specialist work closely with the building administrators and Team Leaders to provide programs to support the classroom as well as school-wide initiatives which promote proper behavior, good decision-making and positive habits. We also offer compensatory assistance in the areas of reading and mathematics through our Title I Program . A full complement of Special Education services are provided to those children with identified learning disabilities as defined by state and federal guidelines. ESOL students receive support from tutors with expertise in this area.
As a "school of choice", parents and students have a number of options regarding the instructional format at certain grade levels. Conventional classes are available at each grade level with looping teams available at grades 1/2 and grades 2/3. Parent and community involvement is a hallmark of the school program. Pelham Elementary has been recognized as a Blue Ribbon School for its outstanding volunteer program. Parents, senior citizens, high school students and other citizens assist teachers and students in a multitude of ways within the classroom and throughout school.
