REFLECT

Name

You are in charge of  making your own (figurative) roadmap.  Think about what landmarks you will be looking for along the way.  Ask yourself what you already know, what you need to learn, how you will orient your map and point your compass

Through the Decades (1930s-1950s) Journal or Historical Novel

This assignment is designed to give you an opportunity to delve deeply into American history. As with all assignments, quality of detail is important. As you select information to illustrate to the reader your knowledge of these decades, keep in mind that the relevance of the information is very important. Ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Social: What was the social fabric of society like? In particular, how were my characters affected by social change? What is the culture like? What details can you provide to illustrate your points?

  1. Political: What was the political climate of each decade? How do we know this? What experiences do your characters encounter? What is in the newspapers? On radio? On television? What are the issues of concern to Americans? Why?

  1. Economic: What economic details can you highlight that will give us a good indication of life for the average American? Are your characters “average” Americans? How do we know this?

Finally, be sure to make connections between the details. Tell the reader why your information is important. How are the characters shaped by what is happening in our society?

Due date is Monday, May 16. Be mindful that projects will not be accepted after Tuesday, May 17. As stated in the syllabus, there is a penalty of minus 20 points if submitted on Tuesday. However, your journal/historical novel may be passed in before May 16.

Final Note: I hope you enjoy working on this project and that you will learn more about the United States and its people during this time period. I am looking forward to reading your personal accounts of this era. Remember, if you have questions or need help, please ask!
