What is the 4-School Model?

            4-School Plan

The 4-School Model includes building a new high school for grades 9-12 as well as renovating the current high school to hold grades 7-8.  Grades 5-6 would go to the middle school and grades 1-4 would remain in the elementary school.

What do we get for the price?

A fully-equipped new facility and renovations to the current high school to be used as a middle school with enough capacity for expected growth for the next 20+ years across all grade levels. The new high school would welcome the freshman class in fall 2010. The building design incorporates "green" elements to build an energy efficient building, saving building costs and long term upkeep. The state will contribute 30% of the cost of new construction and an additional 3% because it has a "green" design.  In summary, the tax payers get a $51 million project for approximately $34 million (including land, new high school, auditorium, & renovations to existing high school).

What's the impact while building?

This plan is non-disruptive to all grades during construction. Renovations with no students in the high school building are more economical than if occupied.

Enrollment Projections

In 2004, the Pelham School Board commissioned NESDEC (New England School Development Council) to perform a study of student enrollment projections in the Pelham School District.

This study projected a substantial upward trend in student enrollment in the Town of Pelham for all grades.

The projections were updated in 2005.

And in 2006, the Pelham School District also commissioned a second study by the NHSBA (New Hampshire School Boards Association) to confirm student enrollment projections in the Pelham School District.

This study confirmed the student enrollment increases projected by the earlier report.

mmary, student enrollment is projected to increase by about 20% (442 students) in the next 10 years throughout all grades:

In summary, student enrollment is projected to increase by about 20% (442 students) in the next 10 years throughout all grades:

  •     16% at Pelham Elementary School

      ▪         27% at Pelham Memorial School

      ▪         20% at Pelham High School

Four School Model

Each of the existing schools is functioning at, or above, their capacities:

enrollment

classroom capacity

core capacity

Elementary School

935

940

Middle School

544

510

300-400

High School

705

540

600-700

Therefore, the most cost-effective solution is a Four School concept:

 ▪         Elementary School - grades 1-4

         Upper Elementary School - grades 5 & 6

         Junior High School - grades 7 & 8

         High School - grades 9-12

A new school will allow a reduction in the number of grades at each existing school, allowing for enrollment increases.

 Specifics of Master Plan

  •  Build new High School

         Classroom capacity of 1000 students

         Core capacity of 1200 students

         Provides for future expansion

         Auditorium optional

  •  Convert existing High School to Junior High

Reconfigure spaces to address Junior High needs

         Address life safety concerns
