Flood Information

- Introduction

FLOOD CONCERNS:

Because the east side of the proposed site abuts the Golden Brook Meadow, special care was taken to assure that the site would not flood.  According to Flood Insurance Maps prepared by Anderson Nichols, Professional Engineers and Hydrologists. the 100-year flood elevation at this location is at 134 feet above sea level. At the height of the Mother's Day Flood of 2006 the first stump out of the flooded Golden Brook Meadow was painted with high visibility orange paint.  Thereafter, Herbert Associates determined the 134-elevation line. The marked stumps and the Herbert 100 year food line suggest that the Mother's Day flood was close to being a 100 year flood.

According to the Federal Flood Insurance Administration Flood Maps, the 500-year flood elevation is at 135.5 feet above sea level.

All athletic fields will have a finished elevation higher than 136 feet above sea level.

All driveways and parking lots will be set at a minimum of 142 feet above sea level.  The first floor elevation of the building will be set at 144 feet above sea level, or 10 feet above the 100 year flood level and more than 8 feet above the 500 year flood level.

Twelve test pits were dug on the site to a depth of 10 feet. No water and no evidence of a seasonal high water table were found at the points where the test pits were dug.  The test pit sites were widely dispersed over the entire site. The locations of the test pits appear on a plan elsewhere at this web site.

The following are emails exchanged between the School District's Site Evaluator and Tibor Farkas, the architect that is actually designing the proposed school.

State regulations allow us to locate playfields within the 100 year flood zone (elev. 134').  However, we were planning to lift the two fields nearest to the floodplain to elev. 135'.  This will probably get us above a 200 year flood.  As you indicate, there is probably sufficient fill on site to raise these fields another foot - to 136'; so for now, we can show these fields at that elevation.  After the vote, we will advise the civil engineers of this whole issue when the site engineering gets developed.
